The Word Was God (part 4)
As we have seen in the preceding articles, John has made it very plain in Jn,1:1-2 that the Word, Jesus, is God, the second member of the Triune Godhead. Now in vs.3, John turned our attention to Jesus’ relationship to creation. He wrote, “All things (or “everything”) came into being through Him [Jesus], and apart from Him nothing (lit. not one thing) came into being that has come into being.” The Biblical teaching that Jesus is the Creator is confirmed in :
Col.1:16, “For by Him (Jesus) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Heb.1:1-2, “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.”
The Lord Jesus is the Creator. God the Father created all things through Him. “All things” that came into existence through the Lord Jesus includes both animate and inanimate creation, all realms of created existence including angelic hosts, BUT excluding God.
The Greek word translated “nothing” has the emphasis – “not even one thing” or “not even one single thing.” Every created thing in the heavens and the earth owes its existence to Jesus. It is important to note that verses 1-3 show the utter impossibility of the Lord Jesus Christ being a created being. The Greek verb translated “came into being” is set within the context of created time. This verb is also set in contrast to “was” which, we saw, points to the eternal. Jesus, the Creator, is eternal. Creation began with time.
Do you believe in special creation? Do you believe, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”? The Biblical testimony about God creating the heavens and the earth ex nihilo with wisdom and power is pervasive. The Biblical testimony cannot be twisted and misinterpreted to mean theistic evolution. Do you believe “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands”? (Psa.19:1).
Do you believe that Jesus was telling the truth when He said, “He who made them from the beginning made them male and female”? (Matt.19:4). Do you believe that men and women are “fearfully and wonderfully made”? (Psa.139:14a). The psalmist added, “Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” (vs.14b). How did the psalmist come into such knowledge? Rom.1:19-20 says, “that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
Note that very carefully : every person who rejected God, reject the creation account, and who rejected salvation in Christ, will stand in the final judgment without an excuse. On that day every mouth will be closed in silence and all the world will become accountable to God. (Rom.3:19).
Dear reader, what will it be for you in the final judgment? Will it be silence of guilt and condemnation? Or will it be rejoicing in the mercies, grace and lovingkindness of the LORD God?
